I know it. Nobody wants to talk about time management. But everybody should. One thing that I have learned over the years is to apply the 80/20 rule to everything in my life.
The 80/20 rule is also called the "Pareto Principle" after economist Vilfredo Pareto. What Pareto discovered way back in 1895 is that people in his society were divided into 20% who controlled the money and influence and 80% who did not. He soon found this applied uniformly to virtually all economic activities.
What does this mean to us? Well if you start your day with 10 items on your to do list it is certain that 2 of them will be worth 5 to 10 times more than the other 8 put together. In fact I would be willing to guess that 8 of them are really just taking up time and keeping you busy. But here is the real conundrum. Do you really need to do those 8? What if you found ways to spend more quality time on those 2 items that will be the most profitable.
If you can employ enough discipline to only work on your top 20% tasks and refuse to even look at the 80% until you have finished them, you will be already halfway to success.
Turn a critical eye on your daily routine. What do you need to do more of, and what do need to do less of. Try to discover what are your 20% tasks and activities that will bring you the most success, happiness, profit, or whatever.
